towards capacity & capability
building of the artisan and
trade community involved with handicrafts.

CDI actively supports capacity building through dynamic developmental initiatives for the artisan and trade community. All such plans are prepared after critical understanding of requirements, strengths and weaknesses of a given craft area and projection of newer opportunities or improvements based on possible interventions.

Most of the activities conducted in the past have been sponsored by the Office of the DC-(Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, Directorate of Handicrafts, J&K Govt. and other government or non-government organizations.

The following activities have been undertaken by the Institute on a regular basis:


Design Development & Technical Training Workshops: To provide exposure and skill-based training to artisans through new product development and design exploration. Workshops are conducted by reputed design professionals and their content and methodology documented. Each workshop is conducted in a specific craft area for a duration of 15 days, involving 15-20 artisans.

Integrated Design & Technical Development Projects: To create scope for product diversification, technique & technology innovation, design & knowledge dissemination as well as establishing of market linkages. Each project is coordinated by industry professionals and subsequently documented for referencing and commercial application. Projects are conducted in a particular craft area, over 3-4 months and with the involvement of related artisans and industry.

Market Development: To develop appropriate mechanisms and approaches that will ultimately build a network of various marketing agencies for the regional craft industry. The CDI, also participates in various business events to promote its activities and bridge artisans with potential markets.

• Development of Field Extension Units: To establish several Field Extension Units, envisioned as micro CDIs, with a service capability and optimum digital & workshop infrastructure. The units will assist in product innovation and provide information on quality standards & manufacturing compliances, new techniques & technology and market intelligence to local artisans and traders in craft centric locations.
Eligibility: The design workshops and projects are open only for skilled artisans having identity of registration with the O/o DC-(Handicrafts), MoT, GoI or the Directorate of Handicrafts, J&K Govt. However, in specific cases, artisans recommended by the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry, may also be considered on approval of the O/o DC-(Handicrafts), MoT, GoI/ Directorate of Handicrafts, J&K Govt.
Intake: Interested and eligible artisans need to enrol
with the CDI, Srinagar, prior to the commencement of a given workshop. Artisans may also be taken in on recommendation of the FAC Srinagar, O/o
DC-(Handicrafts), MoT, GoI/ Directorate of Handicrafts,
J&K Govt./ Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Artisans short-listed to participate in a given workshop are given a wage compensatory allowance of Rs. 150.00 per day as per the norms of the O/o DC-(Handicrafts), MoT, GoI.
